ProPublica is seeking an accomplished investigative editor to help oversee its growing local journalism initiatives.
ProPublica is expanding its local presence by adding offices in the South and the Southwest and augmenting its presence in the Midwest. This will be in addition to our joint initiative with The Texas Tribune and our Local Reporting Network. All told, our local initiatives will include 26 ProPublica reporters, 21 partner reporters and nine ProPublica editors. Our team also includes researchers, engagement and data reporters, audience and video staffers, designers, news application developers and more.
This senior-level editor will be involved in hiring, training, story selection, editing, second-editing and supervising the application process for the Local Reporting Network. The deputy editor, local will report to the managing editor/local.
What you would be doing:
Helping to hire and manage local reporters and editors.
Leading the selection of Local Reporting Network partners.
Designing and carrying out training sessions for our staff and our partners.
Coordinating between local partners and ProPublica researchers, data visualization reporters, engagement reporters, audience and video staffers, and story producers.
Working with editors and reporters on story selection, overcoming reporting hurdles and editing.
Serving as a champion for local accountability journalism.
We’re looking for someone who:
Has a passion for and experience with local journalism.
Has a track record as an editor of landing revelatory stories about abuses of power.
Can juggle many different responsibilities, meet deadlines and handle pressure while remaining calm.
Has exceptional organizational skills.
Is a leader who works just as easily with reporters and editors as with staffers throughout the newsroom. We’re a collaborative news organization. We want the same for this new team.
Can adroitly handle fast-breaking stories, monthslong reporting projects and exquisitely written narratives.
